Changing your hair care routine for winter

The long summer days have come to an end. You have probably already made the necessary changes to your wardrobe and skin care regiment. But what about your hair care routine?

Along with winter chills, the colder season brings new challenges for taking care of your hair. It’s important that you adjust your hair care routine accordingly.

Heat Exposure

The drop in temperature will generally lead to an increased use of heating appliances to dry your hair. This increase will expose your hair to longer periods of intense heat. This isn’t good for your hair as heat exposure weakens and dries it out. It’s important that you invest in a quality hydrating product to counteract this, such as Original and Mineral’s (O&M) Seven Day Miracle Moisture Masque .

O&M 7 day moisture masqueLong, scolding hot showers during winter feel great. However, the long exposure to hot water is not doing your hair any favours. If at all possible, try and have shorter showers, which rage in temperature from warm to lukewarm. When you’re about to get out of the shower, make sure you blast your hair with cold water. This will help lock in the nutrients from your hair care products.

Don’t leave the house this winter with wet hair. Take the time to dry it, especially if it’s cold outside. The cold air will cause damage to your hair follicles at the root.

Shampoo & Conditioner

O&M shampooIt’s important that you invest in a quality shampoo and conditioner. Make sure, during the winter months, you use products that are targeted for dry hair. This is because in winter the air dries it out. If you have hair extensions, you will need to only use good hair care products to protect your extensions and your investment in them. Use products from O&M, they are fantastic for extensions and I personally use them and recommend them to all my clients.

O&M conditionerContinual exposure to hot air conditioning while at work can negatively affect your hair. The air conditioning will cause your hair to become dry and brittle. So because of this it’s important to keep your hair and scalp moisturised, using a good conditioner. However, make sure that you properly rinse out all of your conditioner. There is nothing worse than flat unappealing hair, caused by left over conditioner that hasn’t been washed out.

It also pays to invest in a leave in conditioner too. This will keep your hair protected from the elements while you are out and about. It will also help keep your hair follicles hydrated and therefore less likely to split, which is another common hair care problem during cooler months.

Static Hair

Is there anything worse than hair that won’t behave? Static hair can be controlled with a little planning. Buy a quality anti-frizz treatment. When styling your hair with a dryer, make sure that you end with a cool heat setting too.

Another way to control static hair during winter is to simply tie your hair up. This will help prevent it from getting statically charged.

Hair Cut

If your budget allows, get a haircut every 6 – 8 weeks. This will get rid of any split ends that may occur during the winter months. While at the salon, try a new colour too. A warm colour will give the appearance of your hair a much needed boost.

Remember to be extra careful with your hair routine during winter. Make sure that you invest in a quality shampoo and conditioner as well as a good moisturising mask or leave in conditioner. This is the basis for any good hair care regiment. Take note of how long your hair is exposed to heat. If you can, avoid using the hair dryer as much as possible. When at work, increase the humidity of the air conditioning, so it’s not pure dry heat. This will help protect your hair.

A little bit of planning and extra care will help your hair look great throughout the winter months!
