Jack Frost has arrived and winter’s upon you to wreak havoc on your hair. Cold winds, pouring rain, the air conditioning at work being up so high it’s literally trying to cook you and your hair!

The need to have really hot showers takes a massive toll on your hair too. But just because it’s winter doesn’t mean that you can’t do a number of things to keep your hair looking healthy and shiny.

Here are our top hair tips for winter:

Tip One: You may have gotten away with it before, but during winter you will not. It’s time to invest in a quality shampoo and conditioner. This is the corner stone to healthy hair during the cooler months.  Bonus tip, after you have washed your hair with conditioner, give your head a quick burst of cold water. This will seal in the nutrients and ensure your hair is looking soft and shinny.

Tip Two: Keep your scalp healthy and nourished. To do this, use a hot oil treatment once a week. There are a range of products out there which will be able to do the job.  If you don’t have access to a hot oil treatment, use a hair mask instead. Just aim to do one treatment per week at home to help keep your hair looking great. Winter is the time it tends to dry out and this is when the dreaded split ends happen!

Tip Three: Treat yourself to a haircut every 6-8 weeks during the winter months. This will cut off any dead weight and split ends that may occur. It will also help keep your hair looking healthy and vibrant. This is especially true for shorter hair styles. If you are growing your hair, pop in every 8-10 weeks instead.

Tip Four: Tie your hair up. This is an easy way to prevent your hair getting statically charged which can lead to problems such as frizzy hair.  It’s hard to have good looking hair when you have strands that just won’t do what you want them to do! Bonus Tip – apply a serum to semi-dry hair before you blow dry or style your hair, this will reduce frizziness.

Tip Five: During the cooler months it’s only natural for the hair to dry out as moisture is removed. This can especially happen in the work place. This can cause your hair to become brittle and dry. Aim to get humidity happening at work or home as much as possible and if you are heading outside, pop on a cute hat to stop your hair from drying out completely.

Tip Six:  Invest in a quality leave-in conditioner or spray. This will provide your hair with a layer of protection when it’s exposed to the elements and help keep it hydrated in the cold winter months.

Tip Seven:  If it’s possible, do your best not to leave the house with cold, wet hair. This will not only help you keep healthy, it will also prevent your hair from being damaged at the cuticles. Always towel dry your hair and if you have time, give it a quick blow dry too.

Tip Eight: Use hair colour to promote a livelier look during winter. Colour it with a warm colour, which helps keep your hair looking great and vibrant. A slightly darker colour is also a good option during winter for a nice and natural look.

Tip Nine:  It’s cold, so having long hot showers just makes you feel better. However, this process is not helping your hair. Long exposure to heat can strip your hair of moisture. Aim to have warm showers (not scalding hot!) for no longer than 10 minutes and you’ll be doing your hair a favour.

Tip Ten: You are what you eat. Make sure you eat lots of omega 3 fatty acids and stock up on vitamin C.  Drink lots of water as well. If you look after your diet you will influence how well your body functions which will keep your hair looking great during winter.

If you follow these tips your hair should survive the winter months and come out at the end of it looking and feeling great.
